Profile Masaaki Kurosu is now a professor at the Open University of Japan. He was a professor at the R&D Division of National Institute of Multimedia Education (NIME) of MEXT, the ministry of education, since September of 2001. Before coming to NIME, he has been a professor at the Faculty of Information of Shizuoka University from April of 1994 where he taught the HCI and the usability engineering. Until then, he was working for Hitachi Ltd. at the Design Center from 1988 to 1994 and at the Central Research Laboratory from 1978 to 1988. He was engaged in the usability engineering activities, the methodological development of interaction design, the development of LISP programming system, and the development of Japanese word processor. He studied the experimental psychology and the psychological measurement at the doctoral course and the master course of graduate school of Waseda University in Tokyo. He graduated Waseda University in 1971. 3. Academic Background 1973.04-1978.08: Doctoral Course of the Graduate School of Waseda University (in Tokyo, Japan) where he learnt the experimental psychology and the psychological measurement. During this period, he was engaged in various projects, including the project on the environmental psychology, the project on the psychology of music, the project on the psychological testing, etc. 1971.04-1973.03: Master Course of the Graduate School of Waseda University (in Tokyo, Japan) where he learnt the experimental psychology, the clinical psychology, and the psychological measurement. During this period, he was engaged in the experimental research on the recognition memory using the signal detection theory (SDT). 1967.04-1971.03: Waseda University (in Tokyo, Japan) where he learnt the experimental psychology. During this period, he learnt the clinical psychology, the social psychology, the physiological psychology, the cultural anthropology as well as the experimental psychology. 4. Job Background (major) 2001.09-now: Professor at the Open University of Japan. He was a professor at the R&D Division of the National Institute of Multimedia Education (NIME) and the Department of Cyber Culture and Society of Graduate University of Advanced Studies (in Chiba, Japan) He is now promoting the usability engineering in various kinds of industry including the information system companies, the industrial design agents, the car and motorcycle companies, the home appliance company, the medical system company, etc. as a leading usability engineering professional in Japan. Also he is working for the IFIP/TC13, ISO TC159/SC4/WG6, NPO for the human-centered design, and is working for the universal design organizations in Chiba prefecture, Kumamoto prefecture and Shizuoka prefecture. He is leading the project on the life style design group for the ubiquitous information society, the project on the distance learning, the project on the scenario-based design, etc. At NIME, he is leading a project on the optimal use of multimedia for education and a project on the adaptability of distance learning system in Japanese culture and society. As a head of the Department for the Cyber Culture and Society of Graduate University of Advanced Studies, he is leading many committees and as a professor of that department, he is teaching 5 Ph.D. students. 1996.04-2001.08: Professor at Shizuoka University (in Shizuoka, Japan) In the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Informatics, Shizuoka University, he was teaching the Human Computer Interaction and the Usability Engineering. He collaborated with many industry people in terms of the development of the usability engineering. 1988.08-1996.04: Senior Researcher at the Design Center of Hitachi Ltd. (in Tokyo, Japan) During this period, he was engaged in the methodological development of the usability engineering and the interaction design. The target devices and systems he covered include the cellular phone, the AV system, the PC, the plant monitoring system, the electronic medical system, the car navigation system, etc. 1983.02-1988.07: Senior Researcher at the 8th Division of Central Research Institute of Hitachi Ltd. (in Tokyo, Japan) During this period, he was engaged in the development of LISP language system and the programming environment for this language. He developed the system both for the large scale computer system (half duplex environment) and the workstation (full duplex environment). 1978.09-1983.01: Researcher at the 6th Division of Central Research Institute of Hitachi Ltd. (in Tokyo, Japan) During this period, he was engaged in the development of the image quality evaluation system, the development of the character recognition system, and the development of the Japanese word processor, especially for the development of the input method. 5. Current Interest His current interest is the upper process of the human-centered design and has developed the “micro-scenario method”. He is interested in integrating the usability engineering, the requirement engineering, the psychology, the sociology, the ethnography, the design, the quality management, the software engineering, and the human factors and ergonomics. He proposed the concept of the user engineering where he proposed several evaluation techniques including the Dual Task Model, the sHEM, the NEM.
