About Tokyo and Japan

Bank and Currency Exchange

Japanese currency is Yen. Most stores and restaurants in Tokyo will accept only Yen. Major foreign currencies and credit cards may be accepted at major hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Foreign currency exchange is available at Tokyo International Airport. It is also possible to exchange currency in most Tokyo city centre banks. Most banks are open from 9:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday.

Tipping

Service charges are included in all bills. Tips are not necessary anywhere, even at hotels, restaurants and taxi.

Shopping and Restaurant

Most shops are open between 10:00 to 19:00. There are many department stores around Shinjuku station.

There are many restaurants and Japanese-style pubs around Takadanobaba station. Restaurants are open between 11:00 to 21:00 and pubs are open between 17:00-23:00.

Customs Regulations

Japanese customs should pose no problem for the short-term visitor as they are quite lenient on items for personal use. Duty-free import limits to keep in mind: three bottles of liquor; 400 cigarettes or 100 cigars; two ounces of perfume; gifts and souvenirs other than the above whose total market value does not exceed 200,000 Yen. Strictly prohibited are firearms and other types of weapons, narcotics, and pornography.

Climate and Weather

At the time of the conference average high temperature in Tokyo is around 29 degrees Celsius and an average low of around 22 degrees Celsius, with an average of 126 mm rainfall per month. The weather and temperature are rather changeable in this season. Because it is the end of rainy season and sometimes it rains hard, a folding umbrella or a light rain jacket is advised.

Travel Insurance

Registration fees do not include insurance for participants regarding accidents, sickness or loss of personal property. All participants are advised to make necessary arrangements for short-term health and accident insurance before departure from their home country.

Passport and Visa Requirements

A valid passport is required for Non-Japanese delegates. Requirements for visas vary for different countries. We strongly recommend checking with your travel agent at booking time. Official visa information is held at [The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan]. If you need assistance with visa applications, please contact INTERACT2001 Registration Office (e-mail: svc@shonan.ne.jp).

Japan Electricity Supply

The Japan electricity supply is 100V AC, with the northern half of Japan (including Tokyo) on 50Hz. Delegates from outside Japan who are bringing electrical equipment is advised to check if they will require power adapters.
