ABOUT IFIP TC.13
INTERACT 2001 Logo INTERACT 2001 Title

The International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) is an international federation of nearly 50 professional and technical organisations concerned with information processing. IFIP represents countries from all regions of the world. Its mission is to be the leading, truly international organisation which encourages and assists in the development, exploitation and application of Information Technology for the benefit of all people. IFIP is a member of the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee and conducts projects in co-operation with UNESCO. The IFIP web-site is at http://www.ifip.or.at/.

IFIP brings together professionals at the leading edge of practice and experience and acts as a catalyst to advance the state-of-the-art. The core of IFIP's scientific work is carried out by Technical Committees (TC) and Working Groups (WG), mainly by organising events and publishing scientific publications.

The IFIP Technical Committee on Human-Computer Interaction (IFIP TC.13) was established in 1989 and is an international, multidisciplinary committee, involving specialists in human factors, ergonomics, cognitive science, computer science, design and related disciplines. TC.13 members are from 29 of IFIP's country member societies; Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, USA-based ACM and US-based IEEE CS.

TC.13's main orientation is towards improving interactions between people and computers, encouraging the growth of HCI research and disseminating its benefits throughout the world. It strives to develop and apply rigorous methods for studying, modelling and measuring human-computer systems. Areas of study include: the problems people have with computers; the impact of computers upon people in both individual and organisational contexts; the determinants of utility, usability and acceptability; the appropriate allocation of tasks between computers and people; modelling the user as an aid to better system design; and harmonising the computer to the characteristics and needs of users.

IFIP TC.13's premier flagship conference is INTERACT, a well known and highly-regarded international HCI conference series, staged biennially in different countries in the world (web-site: http://www.ifip-hci.org/INTERACT.html)

IFIP TC.13 Working Groups consist of HCI experts from many countries working in the areas of HCI Education and Curricula, Methodology for User-centred System Design, HCI and People with Special Needs, User Interface Engineering, and Human Error, Safety and System Development. These Working Groups organise conferences and workshops on HCI issues and concerns and the proceedings of these events and activities are usually published by international scientific publishers. New Working Groups are formed as areas of significance to HCI arise. Further information about IFIP TC.13 is found at its web-site: http://www.ifip-hci.org/
