Proposals are invited for full-day or half-day tutorials on topics relevant to the themes outlined in the Call for Participation. The focus may be either on recent research results, or on practical techniques, tools or methods.
Tutorials are scheduled for either 9 July and/or 10 July 2001, and may run for a full day or a half-day. A full-day tutorial is six hours long, and a half-day tutorial is three hours, excluding breaks. Tutorial instructors are eligible for some reimbursement of expenses and a modest fee.

Workshops provide a valuable opportunity for relatively small communities of people with diverse perspectives to engage in rich discussions about a topic of common interest. Interaction among participants is important, so participants must have informed positions based on prior experience.
Each workshop should produce an informal poster for the main conference summarising the content and outcome of the workshop. Participants may also agree to other forms of publication after the event, such as a special issue of an appropriate journal, or an edited book etc.
Workshops are held on the 9 and 10 July 2001. A workshop may be one, one and a half, or two days in length. Most workshops have 20 or fewer participants.
The language to be used in submissions for workshops is English.
A workshop submission has the following three parts.
(1) Proposal
The proposal, a maximum of three pages in length, should describe
The format of the proposal is not specified.
(2) Extended Abstract
The extended abstract should be 1 page in length. It should be formatted according to the Detailed Specifications for Writing Submissions in the Instructions for Authors (except that there is no "abstract" section).
The extended abstract of accepted workshops is intended to be published in the conference proceedings. You are advised to follow the Detailed Specifications for Writing Submissions strictly, in case a revision of your paper cannot be completed in time for publication in the Proceedings and the original paper must be used. Word template and LaTeX style files are available at the Style Files and Utilities page on the web site.
(3) Call for Participation
A 250-word call for participation should be provided, suitable for publication in the INTERACT 2001 Advance Programme. Workshop submissions will be reviewed by members of the International Reviewers' Committee an international panel of HCI researchers and practitioners. Criteria will include the workshop's potential for generating stimulating discussions and useful results, the expected level of community interest in the topic, and the overall balance of topics in the Workshop programme.
The outcome of the review process will be notified to the contact
author of the workshop proposals via e-mail no later than 31 January
2001. The final version of the extended abstract must be received
by the secretariat by 20 February 2001 to ensure the inclusion
of the abstract in the proceedings.
Abstracts that do not conform to the Submission Style Guide may
not be published in the proceedings.
At least one author of each accepted workshop must sign the copyright form and register at the early bird rate for INTERACT 2001 by 20 February 2001 for the paper to be included in the INTERACT 2001 Proceedings published by an international scientific publisher.
Organisers are responsible for working with the Workshops Co-Chairs to identify mailing lists and other opportunities for soliciting diverse participation, selecting, inviting, and confirming participants, distributing position papers and other pre-workshop materials to participants in advance of the workshop, and developing a final agenda of workshop activities.
The workshop leader is responsible for facilitating discussion, maintaining productive interaction, and encouraging participation. The emphasis should be on group discussion, rather than on presentation of individual position papers. Diversity of perspectives should be encouraged. Workshop participants (including the organisers) will be charged a registration fee to cover the cost of running the workshop. Normally workshop participants will also be delegates at the main conference.
It is important for workshop results to be communicated to a larger audience. Each workshop should produce an informal poster for the main conference which summarises the content and outcome of the workshop. In addition workshops are urged to produce a version of their report for publication on the Web. The workshop reports will be published on the IFIP TC13 web site. A version of the workshop report appropriate for print publication in a suitable bulletin or newsletter is also encouraged.
Posters are intended to provide a forum for the dissemination of late-breaking results or innovations. They are not intended for speculative or untried ideas, but may describe the outcome of an early stage of a longer-term project. Themes can be any of those described in the call for participation.
The language to be used in submissions for posters is English.
A posters submission contains the following:
(1) Poster Paper
Poster papers is limited to 2 pages, and should be formatted according to the Detailed Specifications for Writing Submissions in the Instructions for Authors. The poster papers of accepted posters are intended to be published in the conference proceedings. You are advised to follow the Detailed Specifications for Writing Submissions strictly so that your poster paper can be used for publication in the Proceedings . Word template and LaTeX style files are available at the Style Files and Utilities page on the web site.
Remember that delegates will have a copy of your two-page paper, so your aim is to motivate delegates to read your paper. You do not need to reproduce every detail in the paper on your poster, so identify the key points of your paper and build your poster layout around them.
(2) Poster Plan
Successful posters will be displayed on a board 1.2m wide and 1.8m high. You need to show reviewers that you have thought about your poster layout. To do this, you are required to submit an A4 poster plan (portrait format) in addition to your two-page paper. The outline should clearly communicate the main content of your poster - but only as a schematic layout. Your two-page paper should provide the context for reviewers to understand and interpret your poster outline (plan).
Your poster plan should demonstrate an understanding of how people will read and view your poster. There should be a clear reading order for the poster. The key points should be prominent and obvious. Remember that the poster should be easy to read from a distance. Graphics and colour can be used to convey information quickly and easily. Consider using illustrations, drawings, graphics or photographs where appropriate.
Electronic Submission is strongly recommended. The procedures for electronic submission and where and how to submit are described in the Instructions for Electronic Submission.
The following documents are required for the review of posters:

The doctoral consortium provides a forum in which doctoral students present their work to a panel of expert researchers with extensive experience of HCI research and PhD supervision. This is done together with a small group of peers from a wide range of backgrounds and locations and at a similar stage in their study.
The consortium will operate in a workshop format, providing feedback on the participants' current research and guidance for future directions. Each participant will be asked to give a short presentation of his or her work. A substantial part of the time will be given over to discussion and feedback. discussion and feedback.

Laboratory and Organisational Overviews provide a platform for HCI research groups in universities or research institutions, and product design teams in IT supplier and user organisations (commercial or public sector), to introduce themselves to the wider HCI community, and share some of the insights, challenges and successes in their work. Accepted proposals will be allocated a 45-minute programme slot, which they can use to present their work and highlight the issues they have addressed, the solutions they have arrived at, and the future challenges they anticipate.
